“Oh the rain, rain, rain comes down, down, down”
The more I think about this, the more it happens quite frequently. You know when people are asking you questions about Orlando and Florida when they are planning their dream holiday and you know how excited you get telling them all the bits that you want to get out and you end up just bombarding them with information?
Well the one question I always answer with “its fine, don’t worry” is the one that goes…. “people have said it gets awfully hot in the summer. What do you think?”
My answer is yep it gets hot but lets face it that’s why we go on a summer holiday; isn’t it? I mean pop over to Cyprus or Egypt and you will encounter hot. My folks also used to spend the summers in Scottsdale, Arizona and that was proper hot. But I know Florida is a different heat, it’s a tropical wet humid heat. However I always end up answering this question with the infamous comment…… “its really fine and every day at 4pm there is a massive thunderstorm for 20 minutes which clears the air”.
So that got me thinking….. a few years ago when we were over for our summer exodus to “Happyland” we had apparently packed an extra family member called Faye. That blasted storm/hurricane, whatever! Lasted too long and whilst it did not ruin our holiday it did put a strain on my “what to do if it rains” back-up plans. So, if you ever have to suffer two, three even four weeks of constant rain – do not despair as I will now divulge my “what to do in the rain back up plan”
In no particular order……
1…. Go shopping. We all love to shop in Orlando and there is never a better time to hit a mall when its raining.
2…. Stay in! Juz recently commented on the Podcast he had to spend some time with his family when there was a power outage (he forgot to pay his bill) and he loved it. If you are in a villa there is so much you can do as a family. We spent days playing games and chilling.
3…. Cinema! Go see a film. There are loads of great films also on and often these are out before there are available here in the UK; just think of the bragging rights!
4…. Go Skateboarding! At the Festival Bay mall (which is one the best places to go in the rain) they have a Vans indoor skate park. Awesome. You can rent all you need and its perfect.
5…. Also at Festival Bay mall is Monkey Joes, a brilliant indoor play centre for little kids.
6…. Still at Festival Bay mall anyone for glow in the dark mini golf? Have to ry it before you knock it
7…. Go out to i-drive and hit the many excellent “other” attractions such as Titantic or Wonderwoks. All inside and all awesome for a half day. Wonderworks even has a brilliant dinner show with pizza. Can not ask for more than that.
8… Go hotel surfing… If you at a Disney hotel (or actually even if you are not) then spend a few hours trawling around the other Disney hotels checking out the places and pools. Great fun. Always aim to be at the Beach Club around lunch time for that Kitchen sink!!
9…. Explore. Go take a drive to Mount Dora or visit Celebration. Get a cheap brolly and away you go!
10… Buy a poncho from Walmart and hit the parks! We went to Hollywood Studios when it was raining cats and dogs and it was empty. British upper lip saw us through and a silly looking poncho but we had a great day. I can not say how great Big Thunder Mountain is in the wet!
Whilst we love being English and we love the weather and cricket, lets not let “rain stop play” and continue to enjoy our Orlando dream holiday!
Slaters…..

Craig Williams on 15 March 2010Number 8 is my favourite, so much so that we do it when the sun shines sometimes!! One of our favourite days is doing "the loop" around the Boardwalk area, taking in the Yacht and Beach, Swan, Dolphin and Boardwalk. I guess it gives us a chance to see where the posh folk stay!! :-)
We look at the shops, the hotels themselves, have some lunch (yep, Beaches and Cream is a must) and then wander down the Boardwalk, grabbing the kids a corn dog, as this seems to be one of the few places to sell them. There are few better places in WDW than the Boardwalk at dusk.
I wish I was there now!
Alternatively, the monorail loop is another lovely day, taking in the three hotels. Each of these (Grand Floz, Poly and Contemporary) have stunning eateries too.

We did Epcot in the rain last year. World Showcase was probably not the best choice in a torential downpour but we still had fun. After all, as soon as the rain goes it doesnt take long to dry off
