DO YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT?

02 February 2010 by Craig

Do you want fries with that?

Mmmmmmm, sing with me….. two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun….. that’s a tune we all know and love and makes us think, maybe crave for a lovely Big Mac. BUT when in Orlando, I have to admit we never eat at the golden arches and here is why…

I wont lie to you I loves a Maccie D’s there is no doubt. I am a simple large Big Mac Meal man, vanilla shake and that will do me nicely. But when I am in Florida I always try and make a rule to eat at places that I cannot eat at here in the UK so the big “M” is off limits to the Duncan’s! So where do we get out burger fix? What place is the King of Burgers for us?

We all know the USA is the home of the cheeseburger, just as the King himself (if you have a means of doing that without using funny potions, boards or holding hands with strangers in the dark!) but which place to you try. Well for me there are two types of burger. The fast food burger and the restaurant burger and they are both different. For this blog I will concentrate on the former rather than the latter because I cant eat a half pound burger no matter how I try so the TGI Friday, Chilli’s. Outback burgers are all non contenders.

The contenders are for this fight…. Wendys, Fuddruckers, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Disney Burgers, Steak n Shake, Johnny Rockets and Checkers

Where do I start…. I have to admit I have eaten at all of them and the list I would say is as follows. In first place and the king of burgers just has to be

1. Five Guys Burgers and Fries!
2. Steak n Shake
3. Johnny Rockets
4. Fuddruckers
5. Wendys
6.. Disney Burgers
7. Checkers

So why do Five Guys get the nod? Well if you have never been to one you really should try them. There is one now in the Florida Mall and the one I visit is in Winter Garden Village. I love the way that when you enter the place the queue line is made up from bags of spuds waiting to be chipped and you help yourself to a cup of monkey nuts/peanuts and you just drop those shells on the floor!

The menu is simple. Pick a burger, pick a topping job done. And they are cooked to perfection!

Steak n Shake get second place because their shakes are better than their burgers which are not half bad at all. Real steak cooked and flattened for you. I still cant believe that our own Adam Mr Disney Goodger stayed within 5 mins walk of a Steak n Shake and never tried it! Shame on you!

Johnny Rockets has a great setting and a nice well cooked and seasoned burger. The one in the Mall of Millennia is my favourite for sure.

It was a close call between Fuddruckers and Wendy’s I like them both but many people prefer Fuds so I think they pipped it on popularity alone. But both great burgers freshly cooked at great prices.

Disney burgers did not fair well, mainly because they vary so much around property. Yes you get a good one a Beaches n Cream but elsewhere its not so great. As for checkers, well I never understood this place and the food has never been something that appeals to me at all. Its yuk.

There are loads of other places I have not mentioned and I know you will all have your favourites. All I would love you to do though is please try at least one of these places if you have not before and try and steer clear of the big McD, there is no need for you to go there whilst in Orlando and you can get comparable if not better food elsewhere.

And as a pre-emptive strike even if you are at Downtown Disney and you want a burger, the nearest Steak n Shake is about three miles away!

Now, who wants fries with that?

We have never ate at McDs here but I do like a burger so its good to hear from you what the best options in Orlando are. It clears up what Fuddruckers is, lol, I had heard of it but not known what it actually was. We are going to try Beaches n Cream this year so will be getting a burger there but we are also planning a few off-site dining excursions too so may well end up at one of your recommendations.....lordy my mouth is watering already!
