SEA WORLD

26 February 2010 by Juz

"We’re going to make any changes we have to make sure this doesn’t happen again."

"We work with him very, very carefully. We did not get in the water with this animal like we do with other killer whales because we recognised his potential.

"We didn’t ignore those incidents,"

"every intention of continuing to interact with this animal, though the procedures for working with him will change".

Are all these comments from Sea World justifiable?

Do we not put down animals in dogs attacks? Bear attacks? Big cat attacks?

Yet Sea World have already decided that Tilikum will not be released or put down even though he has already caused a death in the same way in the past, I will not mention the other death as it was more likely hypothermia that killed that man.

And by the way the whales’ name is Tilikum and not Shamu as some part of the media seem to constantly call it to gain more dramatic effect.

So is it time for Sea world to let go of its iconic animal, and let people associated Shamu with the Whales that roam free out in the wild that Sea World supports rather than the animal kept in small areas for the publics enjoyment.

I mean these beautiful animals roaming hundreds of miles in a day yet we keep them in a tank, no wonder they crave to play or attack, are they bored? I am no Whale expert but I guess they have to be, I get grouchy when I have been stuck in my house during the snowy weather.

So what are your views, whilst I know feelings are running high, is this time to call ‘Time’ on whales in captivity or should we not tar all the whales with this ones actions. In which case what needs to be done with Tilikum? Perhaps he needs to go to an in-between area where he can live his life away from crowds and perhaps try to get him to go back into the wild….

I don’t have any of the answers, I just feel that we have lost someone very loving and talented to a known killer, and in the height of afternoon crowds, that have to live with the horrific memories that this has caused, especially the witnesses who were in the underwater viewing areas and the children….

It has been a sad week and Dawns family I am sure are in our thoughts and prays in the coming weeks….

PS One thing I have found disgusting this week is the stupid and sick comments/jokes people have made on twitter and some news sites; some people need to think before they post..
